The Lost to the Ages quest in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim introduces players to an ancient Dwemer mystery centered around rare glowing crystals. To craft powerful artifacts at the legendary Aetherium Forge, adventurers must first gather four distinct Aetherium Shards hidden across the province. Tracking down each fragment requires traversing dangerous ruins and exploring open landmarks throughout Skyrim.

Finding the First Shard in Arkngthamz

Your search for the fragments begins inside the sprawling underground ruin of Arkngthamz, situated in the Reach region. As you venture through the flooded halls, you will meet the spirit of Katria, who explains the history of the forge. Reaching the summit requires solving a tonal lock puzzle by shooting kinetic resonators in the correct order. Once you solve the mechanism, the first shard rests safely at the top of the chamber.

Locating the Second Fragment at Deep Folk Crossing

Unlike other fragments locked inside deep dungeons, the second shard is located outdoors at Deep Folk Crossing. You can find this ancient site by traveling northeast from Markarth across the rugged northern landscape. Cross the stone bridge spanning the river and walk up the nearby hill to inspect the ruins. Sitting exposed on top of a Dwemer pedestal, this fragment is by far the easiest one to retrieve.

Clearing Raldbthar for the Third Shard

The third fragment is tucked deep inside Raldbthar, a dangerous ruin located in the snowy mountains west of Windhelm. Traversing this stronghold requires fighting through aggressive Falmer forces and overcoming automated mechanical constructs. To open the central vault, you must clear jammed gears throughout the chamber to lower the bridge. After navigating the final traps, you can claim the shard sitting on a pedestal in the deepest chamber.

Retrieving the Final Shard near Mzulft

The fourth and final fragment is found within the Dwarven Storeroom located just outside the main entrance of Mzulft. You do not need to enter the main Mzulft ruin or start any College of Winterhold quests to reach this building. Simply lockpick the secured door inside the storeroom structure to gain access to the back room. Inside, the last Aetherium Shard sits waiting on a stone table next to valuable scrap metals.

Assembling the Crest at the Aetherium Forge

With all four pieces collected, your journal directs you toward the subterranean Ruins of Bthalft located in the Rift. Combining the fragments at the surface altar forms the completed Aetherium Crest needed to operate the lift. Descending into the subterranean chamber allows you to battle the Forge Master and access the ancient crafting station. You can then choose to craft the unique Aetherial Crown, Shield, or Staff to complete your adventure.
